'FROM DEVASTATING KNEE MRI TO A 6 DAY TRAIL RACE ACROSS MADEIRA'

Meet Oliver, one of our amazing SFE members, who has achieved something incredible this year.

All simply by putting his head down and ticking all the boxes that he needed too, which has resulted in him completing a major life goal that he was previously told wouldn’t be possible due to an injury.

Its just another great example of how you can literally flip 180 the struggles you are facing by applying some logic, structure and accountability in place and then getting the necessary work done.

“FROM A YEAR IN A WHEELCHAIR TO CONQUERING UTMB”

Listen in as we checked in with SFE client Laura off the back of her fantastic 106 mile race at Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB).

However, it’s Laura’s back story that makes her result even more special, from a year in a wheelchair following a road traffic accident, two previous medical DNF’s at UTMB and two bouts of COVID earlier this year, it was Laura’s positivity, determination and consistent hard work that got her to that finish line.

“Achilles Tendinopathy…”

I had been struggling with pain in my achilles which had prevented me from running for about eight months. As anyone knows who has suffered with tendonitis in this area of the body it is very difficult to get it to settle. I would think it was feeling better, try to run, then find myself struggling to walk the following day. Mornings would be the worst as it stiffened up overnight and I would hobble like an old woman to get downstairs. It was so bad I had convinced myself that seeing a consultant and possible surgery was the answer.

My physio suggested before I go down this route to focus on exercises which would build strength in my calves and glutes and recommended trying a session with Kriss. We got to work straightway using weights, bands and mobility exercises to work on my lower legs, hips, glutes and core. My strength in these areas improved rapidly and I was able to start some easy running pain free and also complete short track training sessions. Kris increased the challenge of the sessions with him and my strength improved further.

As well as designing sessions that have specifically addressed my injuries, Kris is a great motivator and listener. He really understands the circumstances that impact on my training and my personal juggling act (I am 45, teach full time, have two teenage daughters and a husband who often works away from home during the week). This means he will adapt each session depending on what sort of state I am in and discuss with me what training is realistic for me to try to fit in during the week. My confidence both mentally and physically has improved hugely since that first session in April. I have now started to increase the distances I run and my body is so much stronger.” - Jenny

“Running better than ever!…”

“I initially came to SFE to rectify movement issues that were hindering my running. I had tight hip flexors, weak glutes/hamstrings and poor shoulder posture. I'm now running healthily - faster than for years and feeling strong.”

“Training at my healthiest and strongest ever”

Once you reach these points in your training lifestyle, it can be harder than you think to maintain your fitness and strength.

It’s key to prevent ourselves from self sabotaging or over thinking and just enjoy where you are at and where you’ve come from.

Listen in as Jen shares her biggest tips and takeaways for achieving all of this consistently.

“Back Injury…”

It took me a long time to pluck up the courage to approach you to help me with my strength training - the fear of failing, the fear of being broken again, my back buckling and the nerve pain reappearing concerned me but after our first chat your positivity and excitement with how you could help me was a game changer.

I have learnt this last 6 months to have belief in myself and my body's ability to adapt and strengthening with the correct programming and process. Your daily knowledge and wisdom shared on instagram constantly reminds us why it is so important to strengthen our bodies for longevity. I do feel I am on the way to being a stronger version of me and I am very thankful to you” - Angela

“Hip Injury…”

I suffered inflammation in the muscles surrounding bones in my right hip and a series of micro-fractures due to stress on the joint causes by overuse/overtraining. This was done in the build up to the 2019 London Marathon. After a period of rest and conjunction with non-impact exercise, I could begin incorporate strength training once again.

The majority of the strength work was on my posterior chain and with two classes a week I wanted to regain and improve the strength I had so that I could avoid the same injury going forward. With the help and guidance of everyone at Strength For Endurance, I became focused on not just in building up strength but my resistance to injury.

It was hard work at first but with the end goal of returning to running once again I was able to focus and the twice weekly strength classes significantly helped with my recovery and allowed me to return to light training and eventually back to running sooner than expected.” - Dan

“Confidence working remotely…”

"I always come away feeling reinvigorated and enlightened about the challenges I face. It's really reassuring and empowering to be working alongside such experienced professionals who I feel really understand me - even more telling considering the short time-frame and the fact we haven't actually met! A big thank you to you”

A big thank you to Kriss and the rest of the team for all your help.“ - Paul
